You made it happen!

Thanks to your incredible support, Phase I of our essential theater repairs are underway. We are already hard at work making the urgent updates to essential digital cinema equipment, including the digital server and sound processor.

Your generosity made this possible—and we couldn't be more grateful.

We’ll keep you posted as things progress. Thank you again for being part of this exciting milestone!

Phase II, III, and IV

There is still a lot of work needed to keep our historic theater running smoothly and looking great. Over the next couple years, we have a multi-phase plan to update and refresh the theater.

Phase II: Lobby Carpet Replacement ($70,000) The theater’s carpet really needs to be replaced. The carpet plays a key functional and aesthetic role in the atmosphere upon entering the historic Hiway. Since reopening in 2003, our lobby has seen 600,000 patrons. Our carpet has begun showing its age.

Phase III: Projector Replacement ($85,000) The new digital server and sound processor replaced the most vunerable equipment in the booth and will ensure we can keep showing movies. But, we will soon have to replace the projector itself. This is another large expense and is essential to keep movies, events, and community programming on screen.

Phase IV: Even more 35mm ($50,000) We have one 35mm projector still working in the booth, but without a second projetor, we do not have access to archives and many of the incredible 35mm prints that are out there. Also, we have to show our 35mm screenigns with an intermission! We already have the mate for our current projector - we just need to install it. These costs will cover the electrical and port updates.

The theater relies primarily on individual contributions to maintain the building and repair/replace equipment. Your support ensures the Hiway will continue to be a destination for downtown Jenkintown.

Are you taking a required
minimum distribution from your IRA?

Contact your financial advisor or the firm holding your IRA or Beneficiary Inherited IRA to request a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). IRA account holders aged 70½ and older may take tax-free distributions from a Traditional or Beneficiary IRA and donate the amount distributed to an eligible tax- exempt charitable organization. (You may take a QCD from a Roth IRA; however, since these distributions are generally tax-free, the same tax benefits will not accrue. A different means of contributing these monies may be more advantageous to you.)

The Hiway Theater (Hiway Theater, Inc.) is a 501(c)(3) organization qualified to receive these contributions under IRS code. Please ensure that your check payable directly to the Hiway Theater. You may not take receipt of these funds and then issue a personal check for your contribution and qualify for the special tax considerations of the QCD.

The QCD amount can represent all or a portion of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the tax year; or more, should that make sense from a tax and estate planning perspective. The total of all QCDs for a single tax year cannot exceed $100,000 per individual taxpayer. The QCD will be reported by the firm holding your IRA to you and the IRS on Form 1099-R as a normal distribution (Code 7) based on your age. You must document this tax-free qualification to the IRS on your Federal income tax return (Form 1040). Please visit the IRS website, or contact a professional tax advisor for more information. The Hiway Theater will provide you with a letter confirming your contribution, this should be retained with your tax records.
